The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is gearing up to enhance its water treatment capabilities by constructing a fifth filtration unit at the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant. The tendering process for the project is set to commence by the end of this month, marking a strategic move to meet the growing water demands in the region

This upcoming filtration unit, with a proposed capacity of 100 million liters per day (MLD), is estimated to cost Rs. 64 crore. Construction work has already commenced to augment water supply, and the fourth unit at Chandu Budhera Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is in progress, anticipated to be completed by June next year

Upon completion of the fifth unit, the total capacity of Chandu Budhera WTP will be elevated to 500MLD by 2025. GMDA officials expect to complete the tendering process within the next three months, with construction scheduled to commence in the next financial year

Rajesh Bansal, Chief Engineer of Infra-II Division at GMDA, highlighted the significance of this initiative in addressing the water supply needs of the growing population, particularly along Dwarka Expressway and Southern Peripheral Road. He stated, "While the work on the fourth unit is already underway, we have got the necessary approval and will now float the tender for the construction of the fifth unit at Chandu Budhera WTP by the end of this month

a detailed project report is underway for the construction of a 100MLD unit at Basai WTP. The GMDA envisions enhancing the capacity of both WTPs by over 50% by 2024, aligning with the city's increasing water requirements

As per the infrastructure development plan by IIT Roorkee, Gurugram's water needs are projected to reach 1,135MLD by 2031 for a population of 52 lakh and 1,408MLD by 2041 for a population of 66 lakh

GMDA supplies 300MLD water from Chandu Budhera and 270MLD water from Basai WTP in the city. With a peak demand of 650MLD, the city currently faces a shortfall of 80MLD, met through borewells or private tankers
